Our goal is to allow you to upload your drawings to your AutoCAD WS account from anywhere you store them. That’s the way to make AutoCAD WS a truly mobile experience.
The latest update to AutoCAD WS (now available on the App Store) introduced Upload from Email for the first time. Now you can open DWG files that you receive as email attachments simply by tapping on the attachment.
The integration with the iOS email system also enables other cloud storage applications, such as Dropbox and Box.net, to work seamlessly with AutoCAD WS.
iPad
If you usually store your drawings using Dropbox, you can open them directly onto your iPad. Tap the DWG file in Dropbox. When it is ready, you just tap the “Open In…” icon in the top right of your screen and select AutoCAD WS. Your drawing will now open in AutoCAD WS. At the same time it will be added to your AutoCAD WS online account so you will be able to access it again at any time, even when you are offline. You will also be able to access and edit the drawing from any web browser using AutoCAD WS.
If you’re using the Box.net app on your iPad, it functions in almost exactly the same way – just tap the “Open In…” icon in the top right of your screen to view the drawing in AutoCAD WS.

iPhone
Dropbox for iPhone is also supported by AutoCAD WS. Simply tap the “Open In…” icon that appears at the bottom right of the screen.

This program is awesome. It is SO CLOSE to covering what I need on my iPad. I just cannot figure out how to control layers on the mobile version. It’s quite easy to do on the browser version. Is there a way to turn layers on and off from the mobile version?? Thanks!

Autodesk REALLY needs to make this available for Android.

Autodesk really needs to post an article saying they are working on it so they don’t have to reply “we are working on it” in the comment section of every article.
Disclaimer: I mean this in good humor. I am sure I would be doing the same thing if the situation were reversed.

Great idea for a post, Aaron. I’ll start working on it.

This sound great. Is there an open API that allows this kind of integration?
KMB December 17 2010
How about integration with Google Apps http://www.google.com/apps ? Many companies is using it instead of own Exchange servers, Sharepoint etc.
Why not have AutoCAD WS on Google Apps Marketplace as a product/service?

Using Single Sign-On, allowing users to sign in to AutoCad WS using their Google Apps credentials, and others persons with OpenID, would be great.
Daniel December 19 2010
Thanks for that, Ken. I will have to do some research into the Google Apps Marketplace.

Great application for sharing drawings with clients. One thing that would improve this though would be the ability to download a drawing right from an email link. So the “get link” box might have an option for “get download link” or something, saving the receiver of this email from having to open the drawing in AutoCAD WS and download the drawing. Similar to a link from a dropbox public folder. Just a thought…
Daniel December 20 2010
Hi Jay. You should be able to do that already. When someone shares a drawing with you from AutoCAD WS, the notification email gives you the option to Download the file immediately. I just shared something seasonal with you so you should get the email shortly.

Is it possible to also give download links to older DWG-format, maybe as an option when you create the email? We use the latest DWG-version, but a many others is using older programs and they never heard about DWG TrueView.
Daniel December 22 2010
Ken, when you click the Download button in AutoCAD WS, you should be able to select the format, in this case DWG, and then the version of the DWG format you want to download. The choices are AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD 2007, AutoCAD 2004, AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD R14.
Have a look and let me know if you’re still missing what you need.

You wrote “the notification email gives you the option to Download the file immediately”. I replied “Is it possible to also give download links to older DWG-format”.
I did not asked anything about some download buttons etc in the flash application in the browser… Please keep it short and simple for everyone, especially for CAD illiterates!

My bad. I was looking at your comment in isolation and didn’t take into account the email context.
It’s a great suggestion to have similar functionality from the email Download. I am looking into it now.

Good thing they were able to do something about this and they were able to see the needs and concern of the people who are relying on this. Thus, I hope this will offer a lot of great benefits to people who are also planing to use dropbox.
