AutoCAD 2012

Introducing the Design Feed – AutoCAD WS 1.5 Available Now

The first thing you need to know is that the latest update for AutoCAD WS is available now.

You can download version 1.5 of the AutoCAD WS Mobile App now on the App Store or from Google Play. The web version of the app will be automatically updated the next time you log in with your browser at www.autocadws.com.

The second thing you should know is that this is no ordinary update. We have taken the best things about the social web and infused them into the design process.  We recognized the need to provide tools that help you collaborate with your team on your own time in an intuitive and streamlined way.

With this new release we have added the Design Feed to both the mobile and the web app. The Design Feed is a major leap forward for AutoCAD WS giving users an in-drawing, interactive feed that enables context-specific posts and responses to turn your drawing into a living document.

Design Feed

Using the Design Feed you can attach a post to a specific point or area in your drawing to draw attention to a feature of your design and encourage discussion.

Your can target specific colleagues or friends with a post by tagging their email address. The people you tag will receive an automated email letting them know that the drawing has been shared with them and that a post has been created that requires their attention.

Add Photo

The latest release of AutoCAD WS allows users to add photos to their drawings. You can attach an image to your posts to provide clarity or to brainstorm ideas. You can place a photo anywhere in your drawing and move and resize it just like any other object.

You can also add an image to a post in the Design Feed to further illustrate your point and drive the discussion forwards.

Why It’s Better to Upload with AutoCAD

We recently made a video where we showcased four distinct ways to upload your content to your AutoCAD WS online account. You can still watch it by clicking here.

In this post we are going to revisit one of those methods and talk about the experience of uploading your designs using the Online tab in the AutoCAD desktop program.

There are two distinct advantages to uploading your drawings from within AutoCAD.

Xrefs and Support Files

AutoCAD will automatically upload xrefs and support files. The upload button not only uploads the current file you have open, but also makes sure that any referenced drawings, images, font files (SHX and TTF) and plot stylesheets (CTB, STB) are automatically uploaded as well. With one click you can make sure all the files necessary to open a drawing from your web browser, iOS or Android device are placed in your account. No more looking at partial drawings or missing fonts.

Your Drawings are Always Up to Date Online

AutoCAD will make sure you will have the most recent version in your account. AutoCAD drawings change frequently and uploading them from your computer to your online account can become quite a task. For this reason we’ve made it so the Upload option in AutoCAD knows how to sync your drawings whenever they change. AutoCAD only syncs the changes you make so syncing happens faster and seamlessly. You never have to worry about saving your files to your AutoCAD WS online account before leaving the office -- AutoCAD does it for you.

How To Upload Files Into AutoCAD WS

The good thing is that there is no one right way to do this. AutoCAD WS has a number of methods to enable you to upload your drawings into your online account.

Your Android or iOS Phone / Tablet

Android and iOS users: Any drawing that you receive as an attachment to your email client in an iOS or Android phone or tablet can be uploaded into your AutoCAD WS account. You can also open drawings that were stored in your Dropbox or Box.net folder when you access them through the appropriate mobile app.

Android users: when you browse your file management app, simply tap on any DWG files saved on your SD card to open it in AutoCAD WS and upload it to your account.

iOS users: Even if your email client appears unable to open the attachment, you should be able to tap “Open with…” and select AutoCAD WS to upload the drawing to your online account and view it.

The AutoCAD WS Web App (www.autocadws.com)

Point the browser in your PC or Mac to www.autocadws.com and register or login to your online account.

Once the app is running in your browser you can upload files from any of the main areas, Messages, Drawings and Editor, by clicking the appropriate button and browsing for the files you want to upload.

AutoCAD

Turning to the AutoCAD desktop product. Both AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 (together with AutoCAD for Mac) were released with a new Online tab in the main ribbon.

When you open a drawing you can click the Upload button to copy the file into your online account. It can then be viewed, edited and share from any computer or mobile device running AutoCAD WS.

Furthermore, we have published a plugin for the past two versions of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT which you can download from here: http://autocadws.com/downloads

Once you have downloaded and installed the plugin, you will find an additional Online tab which will enable you to upload files directly to your AutoCAD WS account.
