FAQ: Changing Languages in AutoCAD WS

With the latest release, we added eight new languages to AutoCAD WS. Here is the first set of frequently asked questions about the localization project.

How do I change the language of AutoCAD WS on my iPad / iPhone / iPod touch?

You don’t have to do anything! With your iOS device the language you see in AutoCAD WS is governed by the language settings of the device itself. AutoCAD WS detects the language and displays the correct language as soon as you open the app. If your device’s language is set to anything other than Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish, AutoCAD WS will appear in English.

How do I change the language of AutoCAD WS in my PC or Mac’s web browser?

Once you have logged in and opened the app at www.autocadws.com, you will see a flag and a language in the top right of your screen. Click on the flag to see a drop down menu where you can select one of the alternative languages. The language you select will be saved for the next time you open the app.

I changed the language on the web app. Why do I still see some things in English?

The localization effort for the web app is being carried out in two stages. For now we have translated all the button texts and the drop downs from all the ribbons. Some of the contextual pop-ups, such as when you share a file have not been translated yet.

I work in one language, but I’m sharing a drawing with someone who uses a different language. What will they see?

The language settings in AutoCAD WS are defined at the account level, not at the file level. That means you can share a drawing with one or more people and each person will view that drawing, in their app, in the language they have selected. Of course nothing in the drawing itself will be translated, but each of you will see the button texts in the language you defined.

I’m sure you have more questions, so let us have them and we’ll add the best ones to this FAQ and move it to our Tutorials section.

I Shared A DWG. What Will They Get?

In this post we are going to describe exactly what happens after you share a drawing with someone. It’s a straightforward process that is designed to make your work life simpler.

Sharing your work with AutoCAD WS is a secure alternative to sending files via email or using an FTP and it’s just as easy.

You can share a file with anyone as long as you have their email address. They don’t even need a registered account with AutoCAD WS to view your drawing.

The person receiving your email notification:

  • Doesn’t need to have an account
  • Doesn’t need to register a new account
  • Doesn’t have to do anything complicated in order to see the file

The email notification looks like this:

There is a thumbnail of the drawing you are sharing and the person receiving the email has two immediate options:

  1. Download the drawing and save locally in DWG format (just like receiving an attachment via email)
  2. Open the drawing using AutoCAD WS

To open the drawing in AutoCAD WS, he or she can simply click the “View online” link in the email.

As the sharer, you decide which permissions you want to assign per person, per drawing. When you give a user permission to Edit a drawing they can make changes and mark it up. You will be able to see all the changes made from your own account.

If the person receives the email directly to their iPhone or iPad, they should download and install the AutoCAD WS mobile app first. Once they have registered an account using the mobile app, they will be able to open DWG files they receive by mail and save them in their online account.

What Do You Do?

We always want to know more about you.

We believe that the more we know about our users, the better we can make our products.

That’s why we welcome your feedback through any medium you like. We have recently added a Support tab to our Facebook page. Back here at the blog, we have one simple question for you today. We want to know what hat you wear when you use AutoCAD WS. Not literally. Just let us know which of the following job titles fits you best. Thanks.

How To Manage Folders in AutoCAD WS

The file manager in the AutoCAD WS mobile app is a simple display of the files in your online account. When you access AutoCAD WS through your PC or your Mac’s web browser you can add folders and move, rename or delete files. Any folders you create and changes that you make to your files will also show up in your mobile app.

Just point your PC or your Mac’s browser to www.autocadws.com and log in with the same email address and password that you use with your mobile device.

Click on Drawings to access the root directory of your AutoCAD WS account. From here you have access to some additional functionality that doesn’t exist in the mobile app.

New Folder

You can use the New Folder button to create and name new folders to organize your drawings any way you like.

Copy, Cut, Paste

Use the Copy, Cut and Paste functions to manage your online drawings. You can also move a file into a folder by clicking on it and dragging it over the folder you select.

Please note that you cannot copy drawings into a system folder like the one that holds your fonts. Also, you cannot move or copy a system folder.

You can access each of the commands to Copy, Cut or Paste by right clicking. For more information about right-clicking, check out this post from last week.

Delete

The Delete button in the AutoCAD WS web app is the only way to permanently delete files from your online account. Once you delete a file this way, you will not be able to access it again either through the web or the mobile app.

As with the other functions, you can select multiple files for deletion and you can also delete files by right-clicking and selecting Delete Selected.

View

Choose your preferred viewing mode from the available selection: Small Thumbnails, Large Thumbnails or List.

Rename

You can rename any file or folder by clicking on the file’s name in Thumbnail view or by right-clicking and selecting Rename Selected.
