Introducing the Design Feed – AutoCAD WS 1.5 Available Now

The first thing you need to know is that the latest update for AutoCAD WS is available now.

You can download version 1.5 of the AutoCAD WS Mobile App now on the App Store or from Google Play. The web version of the app will be automatically updated the next time you log in with your browser at www.autocadws.com.

The second thing you should know is that this is no ordinary update. We have taken the best things about the social web and infused them into the design process.  We recognized the need to provide tools that help you collaborate with your team on your own time in an intuitive and streamlined way.

With this new release we have added the Design Feed to both the mobile and the web app. The Design Feed is a major leap forward for AutoCAD WS giving users an in-drawing, interactive feed that enables context-specific posts and responses to turn your drawing into a living document.

Design Feed

Using the Design Feed you can attach a post to a specific point or area in your drawing to draw attention to a feature of your design and encourage discussion.

Your can target specific colleagues or friends with a post by tagging their email address. The people you tag will receive an automated email letting them know that the drawing has been shared with them and that a post has been created that requires their attention.

Add Photo

The latest release of AutoCAD WS allows users to add photos to their drawings. You can attach an image to your posts to provide clarity or to brainstorm ideas. You can place a photo anywhere in your drawing and move and resize it just like any other object.

You can also add an image to a post in the Design Feed to further illustrate your point and drive the discussion forwards.

AutoCAD WS – The Numbers So Far…

If you’re reading this you’ve probably downloaded the AutoCAD WS app. You might have downloaded it on the App Store for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You might have downloaded it from Google Play for your Android smartphone or tablet. You might have downloaded AutoCAD WS for Mac from the Mac App Store.

Wherever you have downloaded AutoCAD WS from, you are not alone. we recently passed a major milestone of over 8,000,000 downloads of AutoCAD WS. We thought it would be nice to share with you how our users break down across the different platforms.

App Store

The very first release of the mobile was on the App Store way back in September 2010. Since that first launch there have been several updates to the app as we have continued to build on our initial success. The iOS version of the AutoCAD WS has now been downloaded over 3.1 million times.

Google Play

As soon as we released AutoCAD WS for iOS, people were clamoring for an Android version and we hate to disappoint. April 2011 saw the release of the AutoCAD WS Mobile App for Android. From that time forwards we have ensured that the mobile app offers exactly the same functionality whether you are an iOS insider or an Android advocate. The rebranding from Android Market to Google Play has not slowed the success of the app in any way and we have now seen over 4.5 million downloads for Android.

Mac App Store

In addition to the mobile apps and the web version of AutoCAD WS, we launched a version of the app for Mac and made it available for download from the Mac App Store. since its initial release, AutoCAD WS for Mac has been downloaded over 500,000 times.

Other Facts and Figures

Explaining AutoCAD WS to Your Friends

In the last 12 months users have registered over two and a half million accounts with AutoCAD WS. Even with millions of drawings being uploaded to AutoCAD WS,  I believe that we’ve barely begun to scratch the surface of potential users of AutoCAD WS.

So my question is how do you explain AutoCAD WS to people who haven’t experienced it yet?

Perhaps, more importantly, who are these people? Well they’re your colleagues and clients – people who work with AutoCAD on a regular basis, often every day. We strongly believe that anyone working with AutoCAD can only benefit from an introduction to AutoCAD WS. So what’s stopping people?

Here are some of the things we imagine people who are unfamiliar with WS are saying.

  • What’s AutoCAD WS? I’ve never heard of it. We don’t advertise on TV but, if you work with CAD professionally, you should probably have heard of us by now. If you know a CAD professional who doesn’t know about AutoCAD WS, show them WS on your phone or tablet. Share a DWG with them and see what happens when they get the email allowing them to view and edit the drawing without registering an account.
  • If it’s free, why do I have to register an account? The registration process is very light but it enables us to ensure that the content you upload to your AutoCAD WS account is protected and secure and uniquely available to you wherever you try to access it from.
  • How do I know my work is safe when I upload it to AutoCAD WS? Of course  this is a legitimate concern and the best response is that Autodesk adheres to industry best practices for secure storage of all you data. For more information about security and AutoCAD WS, read our white paper.
  • I can’t always be online so AutoCAD WS is no use to me. Actually the AutoCAD WS mobile app for iOS and Android does allow you to view and edit your drawings when you’re offline. It’s true that you need to be connected once to the internet in order to save the contents of you online folder locally on your mobile device, but once you have completed the sync you can take your smartphone or tablet with you and edit on the go. The next time you connect to the internet, your changes will be synced back to your AutoCAD WS online account.

So even if someone has never used AutoCAD WS before, getting them to use it for the first time should be simple.

How are you persuading your colleagues to give AutoCAD WS a chance?
